Grand Opening: Grayslake Youth Center: April 11, 2008

Grayslake has a brand new youth center called "The Oasis" located at 151 Hawley in Grayslake.

The Grand Opening is on Friday, April 11 2008 from 6:30 pm to 11:00 pm. The event is open to everyone and admission is free.

From the website, the mission statement of the youth center is: "To be the place of choice for students ages 12 to 18 to go after school, evenings, and weekends. To provide a safe and stimulating environment to interact with others in the same age group."

You can find additional information about the youth center at their website http://grayslakeyouthcenter.com.

Additional details on the youth center from their website include:

ACTIVITIES

"There will be study areas, movie areas (with a large screen TV), music areas, conversation pits and dining areas."

AMENITIES

"There will be a stage for bands or small theater productions, a food preparation area consisting of refrigeration units and microwaves, a soda fountain, a smoothie station, and a cleaning area, large selection of DVD movies to be shown at various intervals, and Battle of the Bands. There will also be video games such as Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution."

SECURITY

"A paid adult will be on duty at all times the center is open. Parent volunteers would be recruited to assist as much as possible. Older teens can be recruited to work the food stations. There will also be strategically-placed surveillance cameras."

FUNDING

"General funding would be covered by selling annual memberships to residents of the Grayslake school districts only. Membership contracts would have to be signed by students and parents. Students may attend Grayslake schools, private schools, or be home schooled. Special events would have an additional entrance fee, but would be open only to members and one guest per member. Out of district students would only be granted admission for an additional fee, and only if escorted by an existing member in good standing. In addition, several fundraising activities will be held annually."

Personally, I believe that the new Grayslake youth center will be a positive addition to our local community.
